Objectives

The main objective of the project is to study and demonstrate that broadband Satcom networks can be seamlessly integrated within an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based network, both in terms of protocols and performance. Quality of Service (QoS), IMS signalling traffic, and time to establish application sessions are studied. Compatibility and standardization issues are also identified and ways forward to handle these matters will be proposed.

Challenges

The key issue is the Integration of IMS infrastructure with Satcom networks including mapping of QoS classes, and validation of integration approaches with respect to protocol and network performances. Moreover, the relevant standardization work will be examined and possible gaps will be identified.

Plan

The four main tasks are:

  • Scenarios and architecture definition,
  • Performance and architectural trade-offs (including simulations),
  • Demonstration,
  • Standardization.

Current Status

The Use Cases "Interactive Advertisement" and "IMS Network with redundancy over Satellite" have been described and an overview of IMS network technologies and selected Satcom technologies and standardization activities has been provided.

Integration architecture for the two Use Cases has been specified. The Use Case "Interactive Advertisement" was selected at CDR for further examination. A simulator was implemented modeling this Use Case and the baseline and variant architecture features. The simulation results provided an overview of the expected packet delays and jitter for Video Interactive Advertisement (VIA) and required network capacities. Moreover, the benefits and drawbacks of a IMS registration method using a “registration proxy” were evaluated.

A demonstrator of the Interactive Advertisement Use Case has been implemented based on the ASTRA2Connect platform and the IMS test bed at Siemens premises. The VIA Application Server located at the application provider platform of the satellite network will be run as a part of the integrated IMS environment.
