ARTES 4.0

ARTES 4.0 (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) is ESA's main programme for technology development in the field of satellite communication. Through its various programme lines ARTES 4.0 enables European and Canadian industry to explore innovative concepts that stimulate the wider economy, creating new business and jobs across every industry, through cutting-edge research and development (R&D).

What is ARTES 4.0?

Space is open for business

Developing the future of satellite-enable telecommunication

With ESA’s support, industry can pursue research and development that would otherwise not be economically viable. Growing new space-enabled applications and services stimulates the wider economy, creating new business and jobs across every industry.

Services using space capabilities benefit society daily and on a global and local scale, such as improving education in rural areas, assisting search and rescue, providing remote healthcare and monitoring natural resources and the environment.

The ARTES 4.0 Toolbox

The ARTES 4.0 programme is all about boosting the industrial competitiveness of ESA member states. The programme comprises of different programmatic elements, aiming to provide a funding opportunity for businesses, each with their own co-financing rules that cater to your project needs.

The ARTES 4.0 toolbox consists of a simple matrix structure of three Strategic Programmatic Lines (SPL), also known as thematic transverse lines, and 3 Generic Programmatic Lines (GPL) acting as toolkits for the SPLs.

How to work with ESA in the ARTES 4.0 Programme?

ARTES 4.0 offers varying degrees of support to projects with distinct levels of commercial maturity. For riskier or more innovative projects, ESA may provide more support. The closer to market, the more industry must co-invest.

Businesses within ESA member and cooperating states – whether small or large, new or experienced – can submit proposals to the ARTES 4.0 programme.

ARTES 4.0 Generic Programme Lines (GPL)

The ARTES 4.0 Generic Programme Lines (GPL) are a collection of tools that support diverse types of collaboration projects between industry, academia and ESA.

At various stages of maturity (from R&D to go-to-market), projects can fit within these generic programme lines by applying for specific or open ESA funding calls.

The three ARTES 4.0 Generic Programme Lines are:

Partnership Projects

ARTES 4.0 Partnership Projects with satellite operators and manufacturers provide co-funding and share the risk that comes with investing in new satellite telecommunications systems and equipment.

Core Competitiveness

The ARTES 4.0 Core Competitiveness programme line supports and develops new or next-generation satellite telecommunication products and technologies up to their first flight opportunity.

Future Preparation

The ARTES 4.0 Future Preparation programme line focuses on strategic market analyses, technology and system feasibility studies and the support of satellite communication standards.

ARTES 4.0 Strategic Programme Lines (SPL)

The ARTES 4.0 Strategic Programme Lines (SPL) aim to foster collaboration and synergy between projects within a particular theme. The SPLs can draw on the tools available in the GPLs to provide support to projects within these focus areas.

5G boosts connectivity, generates business and brings added value to consumers and citizens. ESA, the European industry and the EU join forces to integrate satellite technologies into communications networks to accelerate the rollout, reach and impact of 5G.

Space for Safety & Security (4S)

There is no safety on Earth without safety in space. We work on secure space systems to integrate them into seamless operations on Earth. Climate and civil surveillance and protection, routine and crisis management systems via air, land, and sea: we test, launch and show safety and security that is ‘made in and for’ Europe.

Space for Optical & Quantum Communications (ScyLight)

Optical and quantum technologies are the next revolution for our connectivity and for an ultra-fast and secure data exchange. We kick-start the development of new and disruptive technologies, fuel innovation, and mastermind public-private partnerships.
