Research your ideas with ESA?

Qualifications:
Suitable candidates should hold a degree in either Telecommunications Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering (Avionics) or Air Navigation Services. (S)he should also have completed (or be about to complete) a PhD with a strong emphasis in mobile satellite telecommunications or Air Navigation communications, with the subject of the thesis being relevant to the description of the tasks outlined below.

The three possible profiles to be considered are:

  1. A PhD in Telecommunications, with specific knowledge in mobile communications, ideally in the field of aircraft air-ground communications
  2. A PhD in Space Systems with specific competence in GEO satellites for mobile telecommunications (i.e. payload design). Additional experience in aircraft avionics would also be appreciated.
  3. A PhD in Aeronautical Engineering with competence on Air Navigation Services, involving competence in design of CNS/ATM services infrastructure, with knowledge of technical infrastructure, operations, and trends in aviation requirements.

Good links with universities and research institutes and a strong interest in space applications and / or technology are strong assets for this post.

Duties and tasks:
Successful candidates will perform research on satellite communications for CNS/ATM and will be integrated within ESA?s newly created task force on the topic. Tasks will include:

  • Assess and investigate satellite communications technologies and operational concepts for potential use in Air Traffic Management systems.
  • Provide expertise in ATM-related disciplines in support to ESA's activities
  • Participate, with the rest of the team, in the assessment of proposed satellite communications system concepts and propose new concepts and assessment studies.

Depending on the candidate's profile, more specific research activities shall be defined to complement these tasks.
