VSBT - VHF Ship Borne Terminal Integrating Surveillance and Data Exchange Services

  • Status
    Completed
  • Status date
    2020-11-07
  • Activity Code
    7C.047
Objectives
  • Critical review of VDES/ASM/AIS standards for the purpose of developing a mature ship borne transceiver for maritime applications
  • Ensure the design is compliant to VDES specifications and carefully evaluate future revisions of standard
  • Design, develop, manufacture and test a prototype VDES terminal supporting VDE (TER/SAT), ASM (TER/SAT) and AIS in one unit
Challenges
  • Simultaneous support of AIS/ASM/VDE
  • Multiple receive antennas
  • Full duplex option
  • Interference mitigation
  • HPA linearization
Benefits

Today, no products exist with support for AIS/ASM/VDE in both the satellite and terrestrial segments. Integrating all services into one unit offers a great advantage for the customer, both in functionality and reduces footprint. The product will be compatible with existing Kongsberg Seatex AIS installations, to ease the upgrade of existing vessels with VDES.

Features
  • Simultaneous support of AIS/ASM/VDE
  • Both satellite and terrestrial support
  • High receiver sensitivity, typically 3 dB improvement for AIS compared to heritage products
  • Rugged design for harsh environment
  • USB interface for firmware upgrade
  • Web interface for remote configuration and SW upgrade
  • Reception of all types of internationally approved AIS messages
  • Power amplifier meets VDES transmit masks requirements
System Architecture

The system architecture consists of three functional modules on one common board:

  • Transceiver module – PA, receivers and digital design
  • Interface module – Power supply and external interfaces
  • GNSS module – PPS and timestamping using GPS/GLONASS/Beidou/Galileo
