Successful test campaigns for DVB-S2

In-depth and extensive verification and optimisation by satellite of the many new features present in the DVB-S2 standard were performed. These new features include among others; satellite-friendly high order modulations, near Shannon Forward Error Correcting scheme, Adaptive Coding Modulation (ACM) and Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM).

Several test campaigns were conducted that made use of laboratory simulations and real satellite transponders in the C-band, Ku-band and Ka-band in both Europe and Canada. The consortium was lead by EADS Astrium (FR) and subcontractors Telesat (CDN), Eutelsat (FR), DLR (DE), Fraunhofer IIS (DE), Fraunhofer HHI (DE), Nera (NO) and Advantech Satellite Networks (CDN).

Three experiments were set up to correspond to the main profiles of the DVB-S2 standard including broadcast, interactive and professional usage. This extensive test campaign has demonstrated the importance and the high performances of the DVB-S2 standard for all of these three applications.

The experiments also indicated that the Adaptive Coding Modulation (ACM) feature of the DVB-S2 standard has shown very promising performances for the future generation of a satellite broadband system.

The high potential of Variable Coding and Modulation in next generation satellite broadcasting networks was also demonstrated. The VCM gain for Ku-band broadcasting over rainy regions (e.g. South America) or Ka-band broadcasting over Europe can be further boosted through the use of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) techniques.
