While DVB-S targeted mainly broadcast applications, the second generation of the standard can support broadcast, interactive, as well as professional and SNG services.
Thanks to the use of innovative techniques like LDPC code, high order modulations suited for the satellite non-linear channel, and Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), performance improvements in the order of 30% (broadcast systems) and 100%-200% (unicast) are expected.

A Q and A session will follow the presentation.
The tutorial presentation will cover the following aspects:
- General standard features
- The standard selection process
- Standard detailed description
- Demodulator description Satellite channel impact on the end-to-end performance
- Broadcast profile (non backward and backward compatible)
- Interactive profile
- ACM capacity calculation methodology
- ACM implementation aspects
- ESA activities in the DVB-S2 field
The Tutorial Presentation begins at 14:00 on 8 December 2003, and will be held in ESTEC's Einstein meeting room. Space is limited to around 30 people, so those wishing to attend should contact Riccardo de Gaudenzi by clicking on the link on the right of this page.
