NESA Mobile Hospital now operational

The project called NESA is a "Mobile Hospital" connected via satellite to the Arzignano Hospital emergency department, where a team consisting of a radiologist, cardiologist and physician waits to offer medical advice.

The system is able to perform clinical analysis such as radiology examinations and electrocardiogram. Collection and analysis of clinical data is done in real time for both emergency situations and routine assistance.

Early pilot trials began with assistance given to patients at a residence for elderly people. Assistance to the elderly is emerging as a major field of activity for NESA. The system's ability to perform examinations with transportable equipment and diagnose patients on the spot often renders ambulance trips to hospital unnecessary.

Emergency and routine assistance

High patient satisfaction

"The NESA Mobile Hospital reached more than 40 patients during the Pilot Trials", explains Dr Sergio Barbieri, surgeon at Lonigo Hospital in Vicenza Italy and conceiver of the project. "Patient satisfaction has been high, mostly due to avoiding an uncomfortable hospital visit."

The NESA project team which includes the Italian companies Kell S.r.l, Elsacom S.p.A. and Aethra has also proved the effectiveness of the Mobile Hospital. The transmitted RX image quality and its operative flexibility, that enables to perform 10 assistance interventions and related analysis a hour".

"These are important results", states Dr Giampaolo Stopazzolo, Medical Director for the West Vicenza ULSS No. 5. "NESA contributes valuable services by decongesting the demand and bringing services directly to the elderly and to other patients right in their homes."

"This also sends a strong message to patients and their families, promising a solid and reliable healthcare presence in the region for all citizens", concludes Dr Stopazzolo.

Services directly to patients

"The Telemedicine services developed and piloted by NESA provide a concrete evidence of the benefits that early specialist diagnosis can bring to patients and to the healthcare system. With NESA a treatment can be decided even before the patient reaches the hospital, without the need to move neither the patient, nor the specialist. It's an exciting perspective, and the potential applicability to other medical fields is just massive", points out Mr Francesco Feliciani, ESA Telecom Technical Officer for the NESA project.
