eWave VideoServer is an interactive tele-learning system based on MHP. It is especially designed to educate operators of highly complex technical equipment. Examples of potential users of this system are listed below:
- Airlines, airplane manufacturers: training lessons for maintenance personnel
- Car manufacturers: training lessons for dealer's workshop personnel
- Industrial robotics: simulation of complex use scenarios
The key issue in this project is to build up a demonstrator for a tele-learning MHP application with a highly complex interactive user interface and integration of external sensor values.
The use of MHP allows broadcasting of a high quality video image, this is difficult to achieve with pure Internet solutions. Also, the satellite signal is available in rural or remote areas without high bandwith Internet connection. Even a worldwide availability of a MHP application is feasible. This is especially interesting for large manufacturers of complex technical equipment, who sell their products world wide. eWVS could dramatically reduce travel costs and would increase performance of the technical service personnel.
The system architecture of eWave VideoServer follows the standard design of MHP applications. Within the scope of this project we will develop a demonstrator application that will run at the ESTEC facilities. The demonstrator will add external sensor values to the IP return channel.
After the BDR meeting end of September 2003 the implementation phase will start in November and shall finish in May 2004. The tests with the demonstrator shall run until July 2004. The final presentation shall be end of August 2004.
Deficiencies of procured set-top boxes have prevented the project to go ahead with implementation. STB suppliers did not offer alternative suitable models and the parallel lack of development of the MHP applications market in the last year convinced the project team to reconsider its strategy and stop the project.
