Objectives

The End to End Performance and Security Enhancements program is an incremental, evolutionary development of Advantech Satellite Networks’ successful product line of DVB-RCS hubs and terminals. Because ASN already has an extensive installed base of equipment, considerations of backwards compatibility and, where necessary, migration paths to the new functionality are given prominent consideration.

The objective of the activity is thus to provide substantial improvements in functionality and performance, in a manner consistent with an evolutionary progression and continued support of the existing customer base. The technical areas that are considered to be of the highest importance for this development are Accelerated VPN and MESH.

Challenges
  • Accelerated Virtual Private Networks: This will provide a number of different VPN solutions, suitable for different network application scenarios.
  • The MESH system requires enhancements to the functionality and equipment of standard DVB-RCS hub stations and access terminals. For existing DVB-RCS hub installations this will necessitate some upgrades in software, and depending on the hub legacy hardware as well. For the terminals, the enhancements involve an additional mesh demodulator card, associated software for mesh signalling and the C2P connection control protocol, and upgraded RF and larger antenna for the outdoor unit.
Benefits

The benefits to the ASN DVB-RCS product line are to introduce 2 new features into its vast product offerings providing efficient Virtual Private Network security and also MESH connectivity.

Features

Accelerated Virtual Private Networks:
Efficient support for Virtual Private Networks (VPN) is a high-priority requirement from many institutional/enterprise customers, who generally require a high degree of security in the communications. The proposed work will result in the availability of a number of different solutions for VPN. Due to the nature of VPN's, there can be interactions with other system features such as PEP, sometimes with undesirable effects. It is therefore necessary to offer a number of different scenarios that can be chosen to match specific network configurations.

MESH System:
A DVB-RCS based transparent mesh system is an overlay to the standard DVB-RCS access network architecture which achieves a combined star / mesh network. The Hub station performs the network management and control functions for the mesh overlay network, as well as supporting the gateway for any access traffic to the mesh terminals operating in dual star/mesh mode. The mesh overlay system requires enhancements to the functionality and equipment of standard DVB-RCS hub stations and access terminals.

For existing DVB-RCS hub installations this will necessitate some upgrades in software and would also depend on the hub legacy hardware. For the terminals, the enhancements involve an additional mesh demodulator card, associated software for mesh signaling. The development and rollout of basic mesh features and capabilities is planned in stages. This program covers the productization of the Mesh-IDU and the development of a mesh RLSS and NMS in a non-concurrent MESH and Star network.

Plan

The project plan consists primarily of developments in software for RLSS, SIT, and Gateway products that will accommodate the features listed above.

All developments will go through a validation process.

Current status

SatNet has successfully completed all of the activities for this project.
