Description
*On Delegation Request (formerly called Priority 2)
The objective is to perform a 3D radiation measurement campaign to enable validation of current state-of-the-art electron-induced dose and charging prediction tools.
Targeted Improvements: Reduction of shielding mass (estimated 1-2% of satellite mass, corresponding to tens of kg) by use of validated radiation and internal chargingprediction tools Use of components with lower radiation hardness.
Description: The uncertainty in the current radiation and internal charging prediction tools require the use of explicit and hidden margins, which lead to an increase of the overall shielding mass and/or cost of the EEE components.
This problem concerns satellites in general but is particularly prominent in large constellationsand GEO satcoms where cost and mass reduction are essential. It is expected that the uncertainty in the prediction tools can be significantlyreduced by correlation with test data obtained during 3D radiation measurements, as it is a better representation of the actual in-orbit environment. In this activity a 3D radiation measurement campaign will be developed and performed to enable validation of current state-of-the-art Geant4-based Reverse Monte Carlo electron-induced dose and charging prediction tools. The campaign includes measurement of dose, fluence and charging from 4-pi irradiation of 3-D shielded targets with electron spectra representative of the Earth-orbit (e.g. Geostationary) environment.
The produced data and the validation of the prediction models are expected to enable a reduction of shielding mass and use of components with lower radiation hardness. The tests will be fully documented, including experimental set-up, test operations, data acquisition and analysis, and the outputs will be made available to European Industry and Academia via a dedicated database.
*On Delegation Request (formerly called Priority 2) activities will only be initiated on the explicit request of at least one National Delegation.
