Description
The challenge of the next generation satcom network will be to propose service characteristics that will be comparable to those delivered by terrestrial fibre links. The purpose of this activity is thus to analyse and trade off various types of disruptive solutions to meet this objective. The overall approach as proposed is the following one: (1) Collect the service characteristics as proposed by service providers using fibre networks to the home (2) Define requirements for satcom networks to integrate with service providers' infrastructures (3) Trade-off introduction of new frequencies such as Q, V, W band, optical wavelengths, or combinations (4) Derive requirements on user terminals, space segment, ground segment (5) Define architecture, assess budgets, performances (6) Reviewbusiness plans in value chain and compare with terrestrial sector (7) Define roadmaps for developing required technologies and assess benefits for the European industry taking into account known industrial capabilities (8) The introduction of open (or proprietary)standards in the standardisation forums (ETSI, ITU, IETF...), the need for recognised certification bodies, the requirements on these standards (legal interception,...) for simplifying the licensing regime of this type network shall also be addressed to assess the potential for actual penetration and acceptation of satellite technologies w.r.t. terrestrial ones. The activity shall address both the infrastructure (space and ground) and user segments. The approach shall not be limited to geostationary-satellite networks: MEO satellite networks shall also be considered, as well as LEO. Inter-satellite links shall also be considered, as well as on boardprocessing and IP routing techniques. The approach being disruptive the Contractor will have to identify the enabling technologiesunlocking the difficulties that could be encountered, with possible various alternatives and with the aim at favouring sustainable approaches over the longer term, the medium term or the short term (all time scales will be addressed).
