FEDERATED TESTBED INFRASTRUCTURE FOR FUTURE INTEGRATED SATELLITE TERRESTRIAL NETWORKS RESEARCH (PRIORITY 2) (ARTES 5.1 REF. 3A.060)

Description

Priority 2 activities will only be initiated on the explicit request of at least one delegation.

The objective is to develop a prototype of testbed for integrated satellite terrestrial networks research, enabling future technology & services validation. Objectives: (a) validate and demonstrate seamless integration of satellite and terrestrial networks, focussing on service business management, networking and operational issues (b) identify technical issues and interconnection requirements; (c) specify interfaces, (d) validate integration use cases for advanced new functional network architectures.

Targeted improvements:

Provide basis for large-scale experimentation and developments of next generation integrated satellite terrestrial networks and demonstrate the important role satellite can play in the future of telecommunications networks.

Significant cost reduction for the provision of integrated services via the seamless and efficient integration of next generation satellite networks in the future networks architecture, supporting mobility, security, cashing, QoS assurance and network resilience. Facilitation of integrated services creation in collaborative modes and new business models for the satellite industry.

Extensive research has been carried out in the networking domain targeting networks evolution. To validate and integrate findings, federated large-scale test-beds have been built and improved for the past years. These test-beds aim to bridge the gap between small-scale, laboratory-based trials to actual deployments. Amongst them we refer to the most known ones; PlanetLab (US), OneLab (European extension of PlanetLab), Federica, Panlab; last three developed/hosted under FIRE initiative (Future Internet Research & Experimentation). FIRE specifies rules for use of federated terrestrial testbeds also for external projects. None of these testbeds include satellite nodes.

The activity shall take advantage of such test bed infrastructures and investigate synergies between existing terrestrial implementations and satellite test beds and emulators. The development of the satcom part of such integrated test-bed infrastructure is proposed. The activity could also lead into a larger scale experiment (e.g. with real satellite link).

For development purposes one terrestrial test-bed infrastructure shall be selected as baseline. The activity shall identify and assess interconnection requirements for different levels/functionalities at network layer, services, measurement and monitoring tools, traffic generation tools, and tools to support business service management and socio-economic impact. The developed integrated test-bed infrastructure prototype shall be used to assess integrated network architectures for selected integration scenarios/services. Examples scenarios are: IPTV integrated collaborative services, CDN evolutions; professional and VPN services in remote areas; M2M services. Reference network architectures can be based on Information Centric Networking paradigm and cloud networking. Software enablers and interfaces shall be developed for selected integration scenarios/services and integration with satellite test beds.

The activity shall take as inputs results obtained in ARTES 1 activities e.g.: The role of satellite in Future Internet Services, Service delivery over integrated satellite terrestrial networks, Scenarios for integration of satellite components in future networks and Next Generation of satellite networks for video distribution & content delivery.

The integrated test-bed shall also be modular and upgradeable. Developed modules (e.g. protocols, interfaces) shall be re-useable in other systems and projects (i.e. product developments). Standards evolution as well as technological development roadmaps shall be defined.
