Description
The objective of ths activity is to develop a prototype engineering model of a fixed satellite system (FSS) capable Ka-band transponder.
Targeted Improvements: Miniaturise a FSS Ka-band transponder with target size, weight and power of < 12 W DC consumption, > 1W RF power, < 1.5 U physical size.
Description: A number of satellite communication missions based on small satellites are being considered within European industry. These missions suffer from the lack of European-sourced transponders which support FSS frequency bands (in non geostationary orbit). U.S. sourced equipment with rather similar functionality has been successfully tested in orbit in 2014. Proposed development can benefit from recent developments related to transmitters for small satellites in earth observation frequency bands.
The activity shall establish the requirements for a FSS transponder, taking into account the candidate missions that are being considered and the target satellite platforms.
A miniaturised FSS transponder shall be designed , developed and tested. If possible, a flight opportunity for the development shall be identified within the activity.
