S-BAND SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE STUDY AND GROUND COMPONENTS SPECIFICATIONS

Description

The service segment will consist in implementing the required ground network infrastructure to offer services over the S-bandInmarsat satellite. While a DVB-SH gateway is the current assumptions, other services will be offered exploiting some of thesynergies with BGAN and GSPS technologies and others, e.g. DVB-RCS. The main elements of the ground segment infrastructure whichneed further development are: - The Satellite Access Stations (SAS), which provides the link to the satellites for communicationwith the remote users, will be placed in Fucino (Italy). As part of the SAS, one of the main elements is the Radio Access Node(RAN), which is responsible for managing Mobile Terminal access to the satellite resources. It handles all satellite radio-relatedfunctionality and interfaces to the Core Network. The RAN already deployed for Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network System(BGAN), will also be the basis for the Inmarsat-S services. The hand held services RAN will be
