TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT FOR Q-/V-BAND LINEARISER (ARTES 5.1 5C.227) (RE-ISSUE OF ITT 1-8206)

Description

To develop Q-/V-band linearizer MMICs with a focus on the device, circuit and housing which are very critical at Q-/V-band.

Targeted Improvements:

Enabling lineariser technology for future Q-/V-band payloads. Improve the efficiency and linearity of the LTWTAs at Q-/V-band.

Description:

In response to the growing interest in Internet satellite terminals, broadband fixed wireless access and high speed data links, Q-/V-band TWTAs are currently under development. ESA has already initiated activities on Q-band mini TWTs.

In order to enable the use of developed TWTs, CAMPs and SSPAs, Q-/V-band linearisers will be required. The linearised channel amplifiers will allow the high power amplifier (HPA) to operate with minimum back off to utilise its maximum output power capability. The LCAMP will significantly improve the efficiency and linearity of these HPAs for a given RF power
level, which ultimately produces significant benefits at system level (e.g. higher traffic capacity, cost saving etc.).

Presently, these LCAMPs are available from US suppliers only and are subject to export restrictions.
The work logic is as follows:

  • Survey and selection of suitable European semiconductor devices and packaging technologies for lineariser MMICs.
  • Design and simulate the linearizer circuit using appropriate waveguide and coplanar technologies, including parasitic effects.
  • Development of manufacturing techniques for device mounting, linearizer circuit and housing.
  • Manufacture, assemble and test the breadboard lineariser MMIC.
