Description
(*) On Delegation Request (formerly called Priority 2)
Objective: The objective of this activity is to develop a power amplifier breadboard capable to deliver a saturated output power in the range of at least 500W covering the complete portion of W-band allocated for satellite uplink traffic (81 to 86 GHz).
Targeted Improvements: At least doubling the available feeder link spectrum made available by Q/V-band solutions.
Description: The use of the available spectrum in W-band (70-80 GHz) is attractive to satcom systems as it could be adopted in the gateway uplink of Very High Throughput Satellites (VHTS), complementing the resources available in the Q-/V-band frequency range thus increasing the overall available bandwidth. The drawback of using these higher bands, Q-/V- and W-bands,is the fact that the signal is susceptible to the impairments caused by the communication channel, resulting in a significant attenuation that makes more difficult to achieve high link availability. System level studies indicate that the W-band feeder link requires transmitters capable to deliver RF power output in the range of 500 W over 5 GHz instantaneous frequency bandwidth. This activitywill therefore design, manufacture and test a High Power Amplifier (HPA) prototype with 5 GHz bandwidth in the W-band capable to meetthe aforementioned requirements.
(*) On Delegation Request (formerly called Priority 2) activities will only be initiated onthe explicit request of at least one National Delegation.
