Activities
ScyLight
The objectives of ScyLight are to address the development, demonstration and utilization of innovative optical technologies for satellite communication as well as preparing for new market opportunities and to support industry to develop/extend its manufacturing capabilities and seize related market opportunities.
Stakeholders
Experts forecast a fast growth in optical and quantum communications over the next decade.
The development of these technologies will be instrumental for companies and countries to build secure data computing and connectivity systems and make ensure future digital sovereignty.
The current stakeholders are European Governments and institutions, as well as Satcom operators, as well satellite and payload primes getting their business models ready for the new paradigm imposed by optical and quantum communication.
Optical & Quantum Communications
Laser communications are revolutionising satellite communications. ESA’s HydRON network will link satellites to optical-fibre networks on the ground, enabling reliable, instant connectivity anywhere on Earth. HydRON is a high-throughput optical network and forms part of ESA's ScyLight programme for secure and laser communication technology.
Activities
European downstream industry and service providers, in delivering relevant space-based solutions and business models for innovative, economically sustainable downstream services addressing global security needs.
Market
Fundamental geopolitical challenges, the increase in cyberthreats, global pandemics, natural disasters and climate change all drive the need for secure and sovereign communication systems. Maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, virtual health and education platforms and the safety of our traffic and logistics on Earth and in space are a major concern for governments, agencies, industries and citizens.
