The European Space Agency (ESA) and Viasat announced an agreement to work together towards a public-private partnership for a direct-to-device project. As part of ESA’s direct-to-device initiative, the partnership project was signed by Laurent Jaffart, ESA’s Director of Connectivity and Secure Communications, and Mark Dankberg, Viasat’s CEO, on 27 January 2025 in Brussels, Belgium.

ESA and Telesat have reported a groundbreaking milestone in telecommunications technology, successfully establishing the world's first 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) link over Low Earth Orbit (LEO) between the ESTEC 5G Laboratory and the Telesat LEO 3 satellite (thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year between Telesat and ESA), using a Amarisoft 5G protocol stack.

ESA, alongside the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, Greek industry and academia, has made significant progress in the Greek National Satellite Space Project (GNTS), funded by the European Commission Recovery and Resilience Facility.
ESA confirmed two contracts with the European Commission and industrial consortium, SpaceRISE, today in Brussels, Belgium. The contracts signify the kick-start of the IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite) programme, with the first launch envisioned in 2029.
